Lot 4088 RARE PRE-FIRE 1864 MANUFACTURED COLT 1860 ARMY

REVOLVER WITH ATTACHABLE SHOULDER STOCK. Cal. 44. S# 151337. This is a nice example of civilian Colt 1860 army revolver made in 1864 prior to Colt factory fire February 20, 1864. This revolver was contemporaneously modified with fourth screw in frame for shoulder stock attachment most likely after the Civil War. Revolver is in standard configuration, 8" round barrel, 1-line New York USA address, blue and case colors. The shoulder stock is numbered 151867 on the yoke and 128039 on the butt. The stock is well fit and conforms with known Colt manufactured or contracted stocks. The stock internally has matching last 4 digits of buttplate S# and contractor mark "M. ST. J". The buttplate and yoke are silver plated like triggerguard on revolver. The yoke has worn through the original factory varnish on both sides of grips.Charles Pate in his exemplary text "The Colt 1860 Army Revolver" details the Colt Army stock manufacturer. Colt sold "refurbished" stocks from US Ordnance inventories after the Civil War. Pate states: "The author knows of only two stocks that may have been completed in this period [early 1864 before factory fire] that are supposedly original..SN 151350..SN 151329. All the other examples in this range are mismatched parts, which suggests they were put together either by Colt or others, after the Civil War. The stock was likely purchased post war and revolver was modified at that time. CONDITION: very good overall, revolver has all matching S#s except wedge which is 5155, traces of blue & case colors in protected areas, balance plum/gray patina, cylinder scene visible, 6 good safety pins, traces of silver on trigger guard and yoke, much varnish on stock and pistol grips. Mechanics functional but tight, good crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (01-27691/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
