Cal. 44. S# 5519. Martially inspected 1st Model Dragoons in fine condition are rare, this example made in 1849 has survived in beautiful condition remaining much of its original finish. Made specifically for 1st US Dragoons with etched "U.S. DRAGOONS" in ribbon above S# on cylinder.Standard configuration blue and case colors, 7.5" octagonal to round barrel, German silver blade front sight, 1-line New York address. Frame stamped "COLT'S PATENT" / "U.S.". The distinctive square back brass trigger guard & backstrap contain an oil finished walnut grip with crisp US inspector cartouches "WAT" & "JH" (William A. Thornton & J. Hannis). Cylinder has the Ormsby engraved Dragoon-Indian fight scene and "U. S. DRAGOONS / COLT'S PATENT" cartouches surrounding the S#. Most every metal part has crisp sub inspectors initials. CONDITION: fine overall. All matching serial numbers observed on barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, backstrap, loading arm, wedge, & arbor. Appears complete and original, sharp edges, crisp markings, 50%+ original thinning military blue finish on barrel, strong traces of original blue on cylinder with excellent Ormsby Dragoon Indian fight rolled scene and crisp single safety pin as manufactured. Frame, hammer, and loading assembly retain traces of dark case colors. Grips are superior with moderate edge wear with 2 well defined inspection cartouches. S#s and inspector initials are filled in with white to make them easy to see. Mechanically fine, bright shiny rifled bore.
