Cal. 56. S# 199. Bbl. shortened 18 3/8" rnd. with an octagon shank. Replacement dovetail mounted front sight behind partial remaining original dovetail with open dovetail for rear sight. Forearm is shortened accordingly to 11 1/8" with reattached brass forearm cap and 1 remaining band. Trumpet tipped iron ramrod. 5-shot full fluted cyl. Fluted top of frame has Hartford address. Walnut stock with steel trapdoor carbine buttplate and sling swivels. Estimated production of 4,435 carbines mfg. 1856-1864. CONDITION: metal has faded to a mottled brown showing scattered light corrosion and pitting. Forearm shows crack and repairs with heavy coat of added finish. Sanded and refinished stock has a large area of added wood along left side of grip with plug type repairs. Functioning action. Dark lightly pitted bore retains sound rifling with a large spot of deep pitting near the muzzle. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (01-28230/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
