Lot 4060 FINE INSCRIBED SMITH & WESSON NO. 2 ARMY REVOLVER,

"LIEUT. C. H. ELLINGWOOD, 1ST NYSV". Cal. 32. S# 867. Standard early 2 pin Smith and Wesson No. 2 army revolver, 6" barrel, manufactured Inscrmid 1862, inscribed on backstrap: "Lieut. E. H. Ellingwood / Co. D 1st Reg't NYSV". Charles Henry Ellingwood (1837-1876) was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Co. D of the First Regiment of New York State Volunteers on November 2, 1861. He resigned on February 3, 1862 although he had signed on for two years. His official service records include a letter of resignation, citing pressing business needs, but the nature of his business goes unmentioned. During his service the regiment was stationed at Camp Butler, Newport News, Virginia. While in camp he made a drawing of himself and fellow soldiers that is copied in research file. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of research, and biography. CONDITION: fine overall, complete & matching serial numbers and assembly markings, retaining about 70% original blue finish, rosewood grips are fine with light edge wear. Mechanically fine, crisp bright rifled bore with scattering pitting. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (01-28250/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
