^Lot 4056 RARE INSCRIBED WHITNEYVILLE HARTFORD COLT DRAGOON

"TRANSITIONAL WALKER" REVOLVER. This very rare transitional Walker is one of 29 documented survivors found serial numbered between 1100-1340. Rarer than Walker Colts in percentage survival. Of the 240 transitional Walkers made, only 12% survive and many fakes are known. This revolver is impeccable and has long collection history. It is pictured and described in the 1974 "COLT ENGRAVING" described as "one of the earliest factory inscribed Colt Revolvers.." The inscription on backstrap reads "Hon. Ed A. Hannegan from his friend Jno. E. Addison". Revolver has tiny Whitneyville S#s used on civilian Walkers S# 1001-1099, grip frame has rounded shape of Walker with trigger guard tapering rear of frame, grips are thin & beveled like Walkers, same barrel address found on documented Walkers. This is a rare survivor with unique presentation & history made in 1848. Edward Allen Hannegan (1807-1859) was US Senator at time of presentation and had a colorful history, US representative and senator from Indiana was outspoken advocate for expansion of slavery into new US territories. He was beaten in bar room attack in late 1847 and revolver was given to him shortly after by Jno. E. Addison, a Washington attorney before Congress. CONDITION: very good overall, original & matching other than replaced Colt loading assembly numbered 578 (renumbered horizontally over original vertical 578) Matching S#s observed on barrel, frame, cylinder, arbor, back strap & trigger guard. Metal overall mottled gray patina with pitting, grip frame retains about 80% silver plate, inscription, address, and S#s good overall. Cylinder has tiny trace of rolled scene and visible tiny S#.
