Lot 4025 VERY FINE CIVIL WAR PALMER BOLT ACTION CARBINE.
Cal. 50. NSN. This is an extremely fine example of the first bolt action metallic cartridge arm accepted by the U.S Government. Only about 1,000 of these guns were made by Lamson & Company in Windsor, Vermont & delivered in April 1865. The Palmer is operated by turning up & pulling back on the bolt. The Spencer .56-50 rimfire cartridge is rammed by the bolt into the chamber, rotated & locked in place by locking lugs. The cartridge is fired when the pointed hammer strikes the rim of the cartridge directly. This gun is in standard configuration, 20" round barrel marked in 3 lines on back of breech "WM PALMER / PATENT / DEC.22.1863", lock marked "US / E.G. LAMSON & CO / WINDSOR VT" & "1865" on tail. This is as fine an example you will find, appearing little or no use. CONDITION: extremely fine. Gun retains thin original finish on barrel & strong case colors on lock, trigger guard & buttplate. Stock is sound, crack above lock, solid w/ crisp edges w/ "MM" cartouche & other small set of inspector's initials. Mechanics fine w/bright shiny rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (01-28274/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
