Lot 4024 VERY FINE GWYN & CAMPBELL CIVIL WAR BREECH LOADING

CARBINE. Cal. 52. S# 4531. These carbines were nicknamed the "grapevine" carbine because of the snake like curves of the trigger guard lever & long ungainly hammer. About 8000 carbines made 1863-1864, this is standard 2nd model which had all the improvements of earlier models, heavy flat supported hammer and sturdier trigger guard with less curve. Cavalry units in Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin & Tennessee received these carbines. This is a beautiful survivor retaining most of its original finish showing little use. CONDITION: fine to excellent overall, matching, complete & original. Barrel retains 95% thinning factory blue finish. Frame, hammer, & lock retain about half their muted case colors, crisp markings, stock has raised grain with crisp inspection cartouche. Mechanically fine, bright shiny rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (01-28267/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
