Cal. 69 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl 42" marked "VP" over eagle's head at breech. Springfield lock with American eagle over US forward of hammer. Top tang and lock are marked "1853" date. Three band fastened walnut stock with trumpet tipped ramrod. Left ear stock has a clear "JAS" cartouche. Musket buttplate is stamped "US" at peak with apparent unit marking "H" followed by a small "39". Approx. 172,000 Model 1842 muskets were manufactured at Springfield 1844-1855. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: US marked triangular bayonet. Modern wood muzzle plug. CONDITION: metal has bright appearance showing evidence of cleaning. Stock has a dark re-oiled appearance with chip below lower portion of lockplate. Sound lock. Good bore. (01-28037). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,500.
