SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 515021. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel marked on top left over chamber w/ eagle head "VP" proofs. Receiver manufactured in 1891. Breech block is marked on top "US / MODEL / 1884". Buffington rear sight marked "R" on top right corner of ladder. Graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. Three position tumbler. Lockplate is marked in-front of hammer with spread wing eagle & "US / SPRINGFIELD" on right side. Rod bayonet is present. One piece trigger guard. Walnut stock secured by two bands. Stock is marked on left side w/ boxed "SWP / 1891". Marked behind trigger guard tang w/ encircled script "P" proof. Buttstock is marked in white on the right side "8 / I / 47" indicating service in the 8th Infantry Regiment, Company I as rifle number 47. Correct buttplate w/ oblong trap. CONDITION: rifle is in nice original condition w/ the wear & handling marks from long careful service. The stock markings are crisp & legible. Stock has moderate handling marks throughout. Receiver, breech block & tang retain a large degree of their original case colors. Balance of metal retains 75% original blue w/ thinning & light wear. Muzzle area of barrel has beginnings of patina. Bore has strong sharp lands. Grooves have extensive shallow pitting w/ notable pit at approx. midpoint of length. (01-27357/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
