Lot 3536 SPRINGFIELD 1875 OFFICER'S STYLE UPGRADED TRAPDOOR

RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. NSN. Bbl. shortened to 25". Dovetail mounted globe front sight, Model 1884 Buffington rear sight, with a unidentified folding leaf tang sight with large disc aperture. Low arch "1873" dated Springfield breechblock and Springfield marked lock. Lock, hammer, breechblock, trigger guard, buttplate, and stock band have added foliate hand engraving done in the general style of the Officer's Model rifles. Band fastened sporter stock of fiddle figured hardwood with added coarse point pattern checkering. Additional features include a fancy finial pewter forearm cap and checkered steel pistol grip extension. Buttplate is nickel finish. Peak is marked "LT. COL. A.H. FRANKLIN". Left side of stock has apparent added markings "US" followed by "GMH" over a partially legible cartouche. Toeline of stock behind grip extension is stamped "P". Brass tipped hardwood ramrod is held on iron under rib by a single pipe. CONDITION: bbl. and action have touched up finish showing marks with scattered dents having wrench marks at breech end of the bbl. Top of the bbl. has 1 filled sight hole visible forward of the Buffington sight. Stock band and trigger guard have a cleaned bright finish. Bbl. band is notched at the rear. Refinished stock shows scattered scratches and marks. Functioning lock and action. Bore retains strong rifling. (01-26811/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
