Lot 3492 FINE ORIGINAL CONDITION 8 GA. BREECHLOADING STRONG
YACHT CANNON. Cal. 8 Ga. S# NSN. These well made attractive signal guns were very popular at the turn on of the 19th century. The 8 gauge guns being the most desirable because they are large enough to make a visual statement and emit a resounding boom!; yet small enough to be stowed in a closet or locker. Loading components are readily available. This fine condition gun has 18" barrel (over cascabell) with improved breech loading system having heavy pivoting breech block with spring loaded firing pin, remote firing mechanism (long string attached to sear) and finger lever type cartridge extractor. Top of breech is deeply marked "MANF'D BY" "THE STRONG FIREARMS" "-CO-" over a heraldic eagle, over "NEW HAVEN CONN" "U.S.A.". Barrel is mounted in its original mahogany Naval carriage with two lignum vitae wheels. All original brass hardware is present including capstan elevation screw, heavy trunnion mounts, assembly bolts and tie down rings. CONDITION: fine. Brass with old cleaning is nicely toned. Maker's marks are exceptionally strong and clear. There is evidence of assembly and disassembly of carriage with marks on brass nuts. Wood retains nearly all of what appears to be original finish with some light marks. Firing mechanism is good. Extractor works. (02-26144/MGM). $3,000-5,000.
