Lot 3482 RARE HOPKINS & ALLEN XL NO. 8 ARMY SINGLE ACTION

REVOLVER. Cal. 44-40. S# 1010 (beneath left grip panel). Bbl. 6 3/4". XL No. 8 Army single action revolver mfg. by Hopkins & Allen. Available information is conflicting, with production totaling approx. several hundred to 2,700 across all XL No. 8 variations. The top strap of the frame is marked "HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG Co/ PAT.MCH.28.81 MAY 27.78" above "XL NO. 8/ CAL WINCHESTER 1873". Metal components exhibit a blue finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered brown hard rubber grips and features a lanyard ring on the butt. Fixed half-moon blade front sight with frame V-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, trigger, loading gate, cyl., bbl., ejector rod / cyl. base pin crane, as well as the ejector rod / cyl. base pin crane latch. Right grip is matching via a lightly etched "1010" on the interior of the panel. CONDITION: metal components retain trace to fair amounts of their original factory blue finish, with the balance having faded to brown patina, exhibiting scattered spots and areas of light to mild pitting and surface oxidation. Bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots and patches of dark moderate pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Hammer does not hold on cock, but cyl. otherwise indexes appropriately. Grips show some smoothing, with the left panel exhibiting a mild chip and crack on the butt at the frame grip pin, with the right panel exhibiting a large chip at the frame grip pin.
