Lot 3429 STEVENS IDEAL NO. 54 SCHUETZEN SINGLE SHOT RIFLE.
Cal. 32-40. S# 4725. Bbl 30" oct to rnd. Bbl band mounted globe front sight with combination tang sight having a large disk aperture. Lyman Super Target Spot 20 power scope with crosshair reticle. Scope has external adjustments and is mounted on bbl blocks. Model 54 Schuetzen Special built on the Model 44 action. Receiver has generous coverage of vine type scroll engraving with oval scenes on both sides. Features include dbl set triggers, finger curl lever with walnut grips. Case colored finish. Schnable tipped walnut forearm and original perch belly cheekpiece stock with elaborate borderless hand checkering. Stock is cut and spliced with a higher than standard comb by famous stock maker Leonard Mews. Right side of comb extension has a carved swirl leading into flutes along the rear edge of the comb that flow into a molded border around the bottom of the cheekpiece. LOP: 13" to an aluminum Swiss style Schuetzen buttplate having unusually wide lower prong. Forearm is fitted with an added palm rest having a walnut knob. WEIGHT: 13lbs, 9.2oz. The No. 54 rifle; Steven's highest grade was manufactured 1897-1916. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: included is a letter from a previous owner stating that he purchased the rifle in 1963 from Leonard Mews; the famous stock maker from Wisconsin. Rifle is housed in a modern foam lined plastic carrying case. CONDITION: bbl retains over 80% reblued finish showing light edge wear with spotted finish loss. Action has over 80% lightly faded case colors. Stock and forearm have good finish and checkering. Wrist of stock is cracked and has a bolt-style repair. Sound action and trigger.
