ACTION REVOLVER WITH FACTORY LETTER. Cal. 455 Eley. S# 9167. Bbl. 5 1/2". 1 of only approx. 1,147 Model 1878 double action revolvers chambered in .455 Eley with 5 1/2" bbls. mfg. by Colt. This example, mfg. in 1882, is marked "COLT'S PT.F.A MFG Co HARTFORD CT.U.S.A.DEPOT14.PALL MALL LONDON" across the top of the bbl. Left side of the forward trigger guard web is marked "455 CAL/ E". Small British proofs are present between the flutes on the cyl., as well as on the underside of the bbl. towards the breech. Frame is mounted with 2-piece Colt checkered brown hard rubber grips, featuring a lanyard swivel and ring on the butt. Standard fixed blade front sight and frame notched rear sight. Matching numbers are present on the frame and cyl., with the frame and loading gate matching via assembly # "413". CONDITION: metal components retain traces of original blue finish, with the balance having faded to a dark mottled gray patina, exhibiting consistent light pitting, with scattered patches/areas of mild pitting present overall. Bore is relatively bright, exhibiting consistent mild pitting and some scattered spots of moderate pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics, with some cyl. play.
