Lot 3380 LETTERED COLT 1878 DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER SHIPPED

TO CANADA FOR USE IN THE 2ND BOER WAR. Cal. 45 Colt. S# 41278. Per Colt Letter, this revolver was 1 of 50 shipped Jan. 10, 1900 to the Lewis Brothers & Company of Montreal, Quebec, Canada for a Captain Curran. As per "Colt's Double-Action Revolver Model of 1878" by Don Wilkerson (pg. 135), "Several Canadian units were raised to go to South Africa....Other Canadian united were recruited on behalf of the War Office and were considered to be British units. One of these British units may have also been armed with Model 1878 revolvers. Beginning on January 5, 1900, Colt sent six shipments, consisting of 50 revolvers each, to Lewis Brothers & Company in Montreal for a Captain Curran. There were 300 revolvers in all, .45 caliber, 7 1/2" barrels with blue finish." This revolver has 7.5" bbl. w/ blade front sight. Blued revolver with lanyard loop at butt & two piece hard rubber Colt grips. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt letter. Brown leather holster written "R.F. Dove" on interior of flap, back of holster written "WHITE HURST" & another name scratched out. CONDITION: fair fading blue mixing with brown/gray patina throughout showing muzzle wear, scattered scratches & marks. Good grips with light wear & paint added to left panel. Very good rifling.
