Lot 3367 PERIOD ENGRAVED, INSCRIBED, & GOLD PLATED COLT
OPEN TOP POCKET MODEL SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 22. S# 5758. Bbl. 2 3/8". Open Top Pocket Model single action revolver mfg. by Colt in 1872. Top of the bbl. is marked with Colt's 2-line address between 2 Maltese crosses. Sides of frame, hammer, and breech end of bbl. feature professionally executed period vine type scroll engraving on punch dot backgrounds, with the frame featuring a floral motif on either side at the sideplate screw. Rear grip strap features foliate engraved motifs and is inscribed "C.R. WHITTE." within a banner. Cyl. is engraved with geometric patterns, featuring a band of spaced animal heads including a hunting dog, wolf, doe, pronghorn, and 3 assorted game birds. Top of the bbl. is engraved with a border surrounding Colt's mfg. information, with terminates in a foliate motif, as well as a wavy line pattern that is engraved around the muzzle. Frame screws and grip screws an engraved with small sunburst motifs. Frame, hammer, cyl., and bbl. exhibit a gold plated finish with remaining metal components appearing to have been originally blued. Frame is mounted with 2-piece plain black ebony wood grips. Standard half-moon blade front sight with high spur hammer V-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame and bbl. Grips are matching via the full S#, which is lightly handwritten on the interior of the panels. CONDITION: frame retains the vast majority of its original gold plated finish, showing some wear and superficial marks, as well as small spots of flaking that show through to a dark gray patina. Bbl., hammer, and cyl. (especially along the forward edges of the cyl.) exhibiting flaking and wear that shows through to areas of dark patina and some oxidation. Front face of cyl. shows several hammer strikes from improper assembly. Blued parts have faded to a dark gray patina. Bore is relatively bright, showing scattered spots/patches of mild to moderate pitting, while retaining good to strong rifling throughout. Cyl. does not rotate when action is cycled. Grips show mild general wear, as well as scattered superficial handling marks and minor impressions, with each panel exhibiting a small crack at the top of the screw escutcheon. A very attractive, period engraved, inscribed, and gold plated Colt Open Top Pocket Model revolver. (25-1436/MLW). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
