Lot 3316 EARLY ANTIQUE SMOKELESS FRAME COLT FRONTIER SIX
SHOOTER SAA REVOLVER WITH FACTORY LETTER & TOOLED LEATHER HOLSTER. Cal 44-40. S# 167340. Mfg. 1896. Bbl. 4 3/4" with 2 line bbl. address & low profile blade front sight. Up until 1896, Colt SAA frames were mfg with a transverse frame screw mfg to holt the cyl. pin in place, beginning with S# 164000 (approx.), the company made a switch to the pushbutton release as seen here. The design remains the same to this day. With the Federal legislation of 1968 classifying firearms manufactured prior to 1899 as antique, a small window was created in which these push button release guns are considered antique (1896-1898). Left side of frame roll stamped "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". Hammer appears replacement. Revolver is stocked with 2 piece checkered hard rubber "Eagle" grips. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: vintage tooled leather holster marked at front near loop "RJ ANDREWS / SAN ANTONIO". Colt factory letter stating the following: "Serial Number: 167340 / Caliber: .44/40 / Barrel Length: 4 3/4" / Finish: Blue / Type of Stocks: Not Listed / Shipped To: Simmons Hardware Company / Address: St. Louis, Missouri / Date of Shipment: October 1, 1896 / Number of Same Type Guns in Shipment: 20". CONDITION: metal has faded to an even brown patina with light oxidation & fine pitting. Grips are worn with handling marks & scratches. Fair bore shows strong rifling with darkened areas of pitting.
