Lot 3110 EARLY WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 HIGH WALL SINGLE SHOT

BREECHLOADING RIFLE. Cal. 32-40. S# 8680. Bbl. 27 7/8". Model 1885 High Wall single shot breechloading rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1887. Top flat of the half octagonal bbl. is marked with Winchester's mfg. information, followed by the cal. designation towards the breech. Underside of the bbl. is marked with "3" bbl. weight marking, which is repeated on the interior of the forearm. Metal components exhibit a reapplied blue finish overall. Ebony tipped plain wood forearm and straight grip stock with crescent steel buttplate. Wood furniture has been lightly sanded and revarnished at one time. Later production Marbles U-notch rear sight. Front sight is absent. Upper receiver tang exhibits an additional threaded hole, likely for a former tang sight attachment. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their reapplied blue finish, showing some spots/areas of light to mild wear and thinning that is fading to gray and brown patinas, with scattered spots of light to mild pitting present beneath the finish. Buttplate exhibits scattered spots of mild surface oxidation. Bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots and patches of light to mild pitting, while retaining good rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with the buttstock exhibiting a dark repair on the left side.
