Lot 2402 I. HOLLIS DANGEROUS GAME SINGLE PERCUSSION RIFLE.

Cal. 8 bore (850 groove dia./7 groove Enfield rifling). S# 9821 (stamped in barrel channel). The 28-1/8" barrel with under rib and very heavy octagonal breech section (1.64" across flats) transitions to sixteen sides and then to round through a wedding band. Barrel is fitted with one standing, two folding rear and copper blade front sights. Top flat is engraved "I. Hollis & Sons London" and "Made Expressly for F&C". Bottom flat is stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs for 8 bore. Breech plug is unvented and has some scroll engraving. Matching scroll is on breech iron. Island type front spring lock with tall chamfered hammer is also scroll engraved and has maker's name at front. Scroll engraving surrounds two circular stamps with Hollis monogram at center surrounded by "MAKERS TO HER MAJESTYS WAR DEPARTMENT". Relatively plain European walnut half stock with German silver tip measures 13-3/4" over steel buttplate. Steel trigger guard with spire finial has spur forming pistol grip. Straight wooden grip of rifle is deeply checkered. Stock attaches to barrel with single captive side bolt through oval escutcheons. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and beaded thimble. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is housed in vintage oak case with brass corners reinforced with many brass bands. A heavy brass bail handle is on front. Rectangular brass plaque on top is engraved "A. Cornish" "Dist. Loco. Supd." "Indian. State. Railway". Interior is lined in dark green cloth and contains: cleaning equipment, wads, powder measure and some cast lead balls. CONDITION: very good as partially refinished. Barrel retaining nearly all of a good re-brown with fine definition to pattern. Other metal parts show cleaning to silvery brown. Stock retains most of an old oil refinish with subsequent minor marks. Wood has been replaced for 2" above lockplate along barrel channel and some repairs are evident on left side. Bore is very good to fine; shiny with some scattered light pitting. Lock is good. Case is fine with most old, possibly original, finish on exterior. Interior cloth is new.
