Lot 2396 FINE SINGLE FLINT FOWLER WITH MOORISH BARREL BY

MORISON OF EDINBURGH. Cal. 67. S# NSN. The 39-1/2" octagon to round barrel appears to be made of watered iron and has under rib. Barrel is most likely sourced from the Middle East or Southern Spain, areas known for the finest metal work, they made both, fine gun and rifle barrels as well as swords. The octagonal section transitions to round with very fancy "wedding band" that is enhanced with relief carved decoration. Gold inlay is on top three flats of damascus portion and also appears on flared muzzle surrounding silver front bead. Hooked breech with platinum lined touch hold and gold band at rear has gold poincon marked "MORISON" "PATENT" (most likely Robert Morison of Edinburgh working between 1790-1807). Breech iron is unengraved. Lock with flat plate is fitted with serpentine cock, waterproof pan, bridled roller frizzen with roller on feather spring without finial. Lock is lightly engraved with some acanthus motifs. Gold poincon matching barrel is under pan. Stock is of red stained bird's eye maple and is iron mounted. Trigger guard has vase and pineapple finial and loop at rear forming grip. Bow is engraved with a trio of hanging pheasants and a sunburst is on ball of grip. Steel buttplate is engraved with dog and bird on long top tang. Square grip checkering has broad mullered boarders. A vacant silver oval crestplate is top of grip. Stock attaches to barrel with captive sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. Hickory ramrod with horn tip mounts through two plain pipes and beaded steel thimble. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: photocopy of information sheet from Drake website with description of this gun. CONDITION: fine; lightly reconditioned. Barrel retaining a fair amount of original brown with some pattern evident. A good amount of mottled gray original color is on breech and lock. Other iron parts show cleaning to pewter gray. Stock retains most of an old finish over some marks. Bore is bright with a few scattered light pits. Lock is good; frizzen recently re-steeled. A very fine single flint fowler. (01-27980/MGM).
