Lot 2366 FINE EARLY COGSWELL & HARRISON SIDELOCK GAME GUN

WITH CASE. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2". S# 10421. The 30" two stripe fine damascus barrels are engraved "Cogswell & Harrison 142 New Bond Street London" on narrow game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs and "NOT FOR BALL". Case hardened back spring sidelock action of W. Scott & Baker design (use number 169) features automatic safety ("SAFE" in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators and double triggers. Action is nicely filed with raised bead around breech ends of barrels and is engraved with 80% coverage well cut scroll within small scroll borders. "COGSWELL & HARRISON" is in ribbon on both lockplates. S# is on trigger guard tang. Straight grip buttstock is made of European walnut which is nicely veined and has spectacular fiddle figure. It measures 14-1/2" over original checkered horn buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant silver oval is on toeline. Matching splinter forend has pivoting lever release. WEIGHT: 7 lb. 1 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in what appears to be its original oak and leather case with brass corners. Interior is lined in green cloth. A large paper C&H label is in lid. Case contains two piece cleaning rod, reproduction dusting brush, Dixon shot dipper and Cogswell & Harrison marked nickel plated oil bottle. CONDITION: very fine. Barrels retaining about 70% original damascus finish. Action and lockplates have about half of their original case hardening color. A considerable amount of blue remains on top lever and trigger guard. Stocks have been lightly refinished with oil. Checkering competently re-cut. Bores are bright and shiny. Action is tight. Case leather is very dark with many marks. Straps are new; old handle is good. Interior cloth renewed; old label set back in. Label is considerably foxed and rubbed through in one spot.
