Lot 2263 SUPER RARE 20 GA. DAVID KIRKWOOD FEATHERWEIGHT

1880 PATENT BOXLOCK GAME GUN. Cal. 20 Ga. 2-1/2". S# 1136. Kirkwood advertised that 20 gauge guns could be made as light as 4-3/4lbs. This amazing little gun only weights 4lbs. 6-1/2 oz. The 26" two stripe damascus barrels are engraved "D. KIRKWOOD BOSTON" on slightly raised flat rib. Rib extension is not cut for top bolt and single Purdey type bolt is the only fastener. Barrel flats are stamped "D. KIRKWOOD". Kirkwood type boxlock action with non-automatic safety does not have cocking indicators or top bolt most likely to save weight. Barrel flats are stamped with maker's name and address, S# and "D. KIRKWOOD" "PAT OCT 1880". Action is engraved with about 70% coverage nicely cut scroll "D. KIRKWOOD" is on each side. Trigger guard with scroll on bow has S# on short tang. Attractively stump figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13-3/4" over hand checkered hard rubber buttplate. Very nicely cut point pattern checkering continues all around grip. Side panels are recessed to save weight and terminate in well shaped drop points. Matching splinter forend with inlet schnabled hard rubber tip has spring tension release with "Nov 27 83" patent date on loop. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .622. R .626. WEIGHT: 4 lb. 6-1/2 oz. CONDITION: very good to fine. Barrels retaining most of their original brown. Action with traces of case color where protected. Trigger guard re-blued. Stocks retain most of their original finish with some added oil. Checkering competently re-cut. Bores are bright and shiny with a couple of scattered pits. Right barrel shows evidence of dent removal 4-5" behind muzzle. Action is tight. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: From the Private Collection of Berrien Moore III. A true featherweight wand!
