Lot 2153 BELGIAN FRANCOTTE MARTINI .300 SHERWOOD SINGLE

SHOT BREECHLOADING RIFLE. Cal. 300 Sherwood. S# 4. Bbl. 28 3/16". Martini single shot breechloading rifle mfg. in Belgium and later converted to .300 Sherwood. The flat top of the breech end of the bbl. is marked "300/ SHERWOOD", with "100 GR." above Belgian proofs on the left. Left side of the receiver is marked with several Belgian proofs (also present on breechblock), with a large "4" stamped at the lower left corner. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the breechblock, which is polished in-the-white. Checkered wood horned tipped forearm and checkered wood straight grip buttstock with checkered horn buttplate. Lyman flip-up post front sight with wrist mounted (base inletted into stock) flip-up aperture rear sight. Rear sight base on bbl. is present with the ladder assembly being absent. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original blue finish, exhibiting some spots/areas of light to mild wear and thinning fading to gray patina, some scattered scratches and superficial handling marks, a few scattered spots of light pitting, as well as a few areas of previously applied lacquer. Breechblock retains a bright appearance, exhibiting some spots of light pitting and age related discoloration. Bore is bright, exhibiting some light to mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with a small crack present on the right side of the forearm that stems from the receiver. Horn forearm cap and buttplate show some wear, as well as a few small chips and cracks, but otherwise remain sound. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6394/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
