Lot 2102 CUSTOM DWM COMMERCIAL MODEL 98 PFEIFER BARRELED
BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 375. Bbl. 24" sporter barrel marked "Pfeifer Rifle Co. Roscoe, Calif." ("375" on bottom at rear) having Dahl banded ramped brass bead sight plus Lyman 48 receiver sight on action. Mfg. in the early 1900's as an action and created into a sporter in the middle of the 20th century with typical popular features of the period. Commercial Model 98 action with matching numbers on entire bolt assembly. Top of receiver ring marked "Sptizer-Bullet" having "375" serial number on the right side; left side has pre 1912 black powder proofs along with Crown N proof. Bolt body is jeweled as is the extractor and follower. Military K-98 style bolt and safety. Hinged commercial (no lock screws) trigger guard assembly as seen on Model 1909 Argentine actions (released by using a bullet tip) proofed on front with 3 tangent rings and internally numbered "318". All metal is gloss blued. Military style 2 stage trigger. Stock is "California" style with roll over Monte Carlo cheek piece, checkered Neidner style blued steel buttplate, detachable sling swivel bases plus Cocobolo forend tip and grip cap on its teardrop shaped grip. Checkering is skip line in grip area (made popular by Weatherby) plus 2 conventional panels on forend. Joe Pfeifer was a renowned rifle maker and arguably the best barrel maker of his time. CONDITION: very good overall appearance with near excellent blued finish. Wood to metal fit is of the highest quality with a barrel pressure point near tip of forend. Classic lines at ejection port area and around bolt release. Nice skip line grip checking having fine execution; forend checking is not of the same quality and may have been done at a later date; possibly uncheckered initially. Finish has appearance of Lin-Speed oil finish with some handling marks and traces of porosity. It appears it would be significantly benefited by buffing and the addition of more hand rubbed finish.
