SPORTING RIFLE WITH SCOPE. Cal. 35 Whelen. S# 349218. The 24-1/2" medium weight barrel is stamped with caliber at left rear. 1903 Springfield (RIA) action is fitted with Weaver scope bases; rear mounted on custom raised square bridge. Bolt body is engine turned and a model 70 type safety is installed on shroud. Bolt handle is swept and has hollow pear shaped knob. Custom bottom metal (probably by Jerry Fisher) has hinged floorplate with release button in trigger guard bow. A commercial trigger is installed. Skeleton steel grip capped stock made of fiddle figured Claro walnut measures 13-1/2" over Skeleton steel buttplate with center wood checkered. Stock features Monte Carlo comb with very large shadow line right hand cheekpiece, ebony forend tip and gold oval on toeline. Finely executed checkering is a Jerry Fisher specialty with rounded edges having ribbons and fleur-de-lis with stippled borders through pattern. A carved leather sling in "QD" loops is installed. Rifle is mounted with Lyman All American Perma Center 4X scope with crosshair and post reticle in Weaver rings. CONDITION: very fine as custom finished. Metal retaining nearly all fine satin rust blue. Stock retains nearly all of its glossy oil finish with only a few handling marks. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. Scope is also very fine with a few marks on exterior. Optically, a bit yellowed. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6424/MGM). MODERN. $2,500-3,750.
