Lot 2042 SUPERB QUALITY TAKEDOWN MARTINI ACTION OFFHAND

TARGET/HUNTING RIFLE BY SCHMIDT & HABERMANN WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. Cal. 8x32R Tesching (consignor states). S# NSN. The 25-5/8" octagon barrel is silver inlaid with maker's name and address on top flat which has slip on dovetail for barrel sight which is in case. Pin type front sight is in windage adjustable base and protected by ears on sides. A crowned "V" proof is found on top and bottom flats indicating that this gun was "on hand" in 1891 and exempt from new German proof laws. Case hardened Martini type action has takedown lever on right side, removable breech block and double set trigger group retained by screw in bottom tang. Action is engraved with superbly cut and shaded sprays of large acanthus scroll. A very finely machined aperture rear sight is mounted on top tang which is adjustable for windage and elevation. Straight grip buttstock made of relatively plain European walnut measures 13-3/8" over case hardened steel off hand type buttplate. Stock features right hand cheekpiece and very nicely cut fancy pattern checkering around grip. There are raised carved acanthus accents behind action and left side of stock behind cheekpiece is finely relief engraved with acanthus scroll and jaeger enjoying a mug of beer after a long days hunt. Matching forend attaches to barrel with side bolt and takedown plate at rear. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: newly made walnut case has bottom compartment French fitted for action, barrel and some accessories including barrel sight which appears to be original. Cleaning rod, powder dipper, small powder horn, some spare parts and 10 primed formed cases with bullets (no powder).CONDITION: very fine original. Barrel with about 80% original blue. Action and other iron parts with about 60% original case hardening color. Stocks with about 90% original varnish with a fair scattering of minor marks, especially on forend. Bore is bright, sharp and shiny. Mechanically fine. Case is very fine. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (01-28738/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
