Lot 2038 SHORT ACTION MAUSER SPORTER BY MARHOLDT WITH SCOPE
Cal. 222 Rem. S# 794.56. The 24" lightweight round barrel is fitted with "U" notch rear sight in island base and gold bead front in long ramp. Front claw scope base is fitted to breech end of barrel. Top of barrel is engraved "Marholdt Finnsbruck Tirol" and "Bohler Spezial" (steel type). Mauser 98 large ring action appears to have been professionally shortened which is certainly not beyond the capability of this famous maker and measures 6-1/2" between action screws. This alteration was done to accommodate the short 222 Remington cartridge with efficiency. Bolt handle has been replaced with very well done butter knife type and a low scope safety has been fitted to bolt shroud. Rear scope base is mounted on recontoured bridge and tang is extended and has been fitted with a safety. Bottom metal has hinged floorplate with lever release and double set triggers are fitted. Action and bottom metal are very nicely engraved with near full coverage acanthus scroll within line and geometric borders. On floorplate this fine scroll surrounds a semi-relief engraving of a ground hog. On trigger guard bow it surrounds the Marholdt logo. The pistol grip stock made of well veined and lightly figured European walnut exhibits 50's styling with white line spacers at butt, grip cap and forend tip. Stock also features fluted Tyrolean right hand cheekpiece, chin strap transition to grip and sling loops. Rifle is mounted with Nickel 4X rail scope with 3 post reticle in claw mounts (rear with windage). Original lens protector is also present. Rifle is also fitted with well made leather sling. CONDITION: very fine with metal retaining over 90% blue on barrel and French gray on action. Stock retains nearly all of its original oil finish. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically good. Scope is also very fine; optically clear. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6458/MGM). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
