Lot 2032 CUSTOM 98 RIFLE ON MAGNUM LENGTH ACTION.
Cal. 300 H&H Mag. S# 17602 (on barrel). The 26-5/8" one third octagon, 2/3 round barrel with matted rib has central portion of rib cut away forming front sight ramp holding silver bead. It appears barrel was originally made for 7x64 cartridge then rebored to 30 caliber and fitted to magnum length square bridge Oberndorf type solid side wall action. Action is not Mauser marked or serial numbered. The only marks found are Belgian nitro proofs on receiver ring that match barrel. Action has been dovetailed for front scope base and rear base has been screwed to lowered square bridge. Bolt, also unnumbered, has Germanic type butter knife handle. Bottom metal with drop box is also devoid of any numbers and is fitted with late style Mauser factory type double set triggers. Hinged floorplate with release button in trigger guard bow is gold inlaid "Harry Snyder" (President and partner of Hoffman Arms. A photo of him holding this rifle is on page 24 "Snyder's Book of Big Game Hunting" by Harry Snyder published in 1950). Action and bottom metal are engraved with sprays of scroll. Steel trap capped extreme pistol grip stock made of lightly streaked dense European walnut and measures 15" over Silver type pad. Stock features pop-up right hand cheekpiece for scope use, chin strap transition to point pattern checkered grip, horn forend tip and Greener side safety. Rifle is mounted with Nikon Monarch 2-4X scope with three post and crosshair reticle with storm caps in custom machined claw rings. CONDITION: very fine as custom finished. Metal retaining essentially all custom blue. Engraving on action shows some softening from re-polish. Stock retains essentially all of its original oil finish with some minor handling marks. Bore is very fine. Mechanically fine. Scope is "near new" with unblued newly made rings; optically clear. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6495/MGM). CURIO. $3,500-5,500.
