Lot 1719 FINE LACQUERED EDO TO MEIJI PERIOD JAPANESE

SAMURAI JINGASA. This exceptionally artistically decorated enameled wood jingasa measures about 16 1/2" in diameter with a domed center. The top is decorated with an incredibly detailed dragon encircling the entire jingasa with stylized clouds and red trails that may depict blood. The clouds and dragon are highlighted with gold throughout. The interior surface matches the exterior brown color of the enamel. The very center of the reverse is not enameled and has two Japanese characters written on it in ink. There are four flat and four tubular areas for attachment likely for some sort of liner. CONDITION: This jingasa shows very light wear with only a few minor chips to the edge. The gold highlighted dragon shows some light wear to the decoration. (02-25821/BF). $2000-3000.
