Lot 1653 SWEDISH M1859 OFFICER'S SABER HOUSED IN A BRITISH
NAVAL SCABBARD.A seldom seen Swedish M1859 officer's saber measuring 37" overall with a 31 1/2" etched pipe back blade. Etching includes a gilded ribbon with foliate ends that reads "Faderneslandet", which translates to Fatherland, and another gilded ribbon that reads "Konungen", which translates to King. Also included in the etching is a multi-rayed star over the Swedish Royal Arms. Gilded brass hilt with a semi basket guard featuring elaborate pierced foliate motifs and a drop swirled quillon. Lightly embellished knuckle bow and backstrap with bird's head like pommel. Wire wrapped shark skin grip. The scabbard has three large gilded brass mounts over a leather body. The top mount has foliate motifs above a crossed anchor and pike. The middle mount has a lantern over a ribbon and fountain. And the elaborate lower mount features a British Union Jack, cannon, a trident, pike, cannon sponge, anchor, and coiled serpent. CONDITION: blade shows a medium gray patina with most of the original gilding remaining around the engraving. Hilt generally shows light wear with no notable faults. The scabbard has some flaking to the leather and the mounts retain 70% of their original gilded finish. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24669/BF). NON-GUN. $1,000-1,500.
