Lot 1616 GERMAN DLV FLYERS KNIFE BY SMF WITH UNIT MARKING.

Deutscher Luftsport Verband (DLV) or German Air Sports Formation was a formed in 1933 with a consolidation of civilian air clubs as a method to recruit germans with flight experience into the NSDAP. Once the Luftwaffe was officially formed the DLV was program was shut down. This example was mfg by SMF, Solinger Metallwaren Fabrik, a company that was founded in 1871 and continued to conduct business making cutlery and other objects until 1974. The blade is marked with the SMF trademark consisting of a seated king above SMF and an arched SOLINGEN. The dagger is mounted with fittings that are made of nickel silver and wrapped with blue Moroccan leather at the grip and scabbard. The scabbard throat is unit marked T.S. 5 491 and German DLV acceptance proof and droop eagle 96. It is attached with a brown leather hanger with aluminum clasp. CONDITION: Overall fine. The blade is fine with some scabbard scuffing and crisp makers mark. The fittings are good to very good with some minor handling marks and a dented drag. Leather is fine with a few scattered dings and minor scuffs. Hanger has a small tear otherwise good with some light scuffing and wear. (02-24984/ZAL) $500-800
