Lot 1519 IMPERIAL GERMAN WWI MAUSER "1916" DATE GEWEHR 98
BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 1908v. Bbl. 29 1/2". Gewehr 98 bolt action rifle mfg. by Mauser in 1916 for the Imperial German military. The top of the receiver is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/ MAUSER A.G./ OBERNDORF/ 1916", with imperial Mauser arsenal proofs marked on the right. Top of the bbl. is marked with an "S", indicating use with Spitzer ammunition. 1-piece plain wood pistol grip stock, with plain wood handguard. Right side of stock is marked with imperial proofs on the butt. Interior of stock is carved with what appears to read "William U'Olier". Stock and handguard have been sanded and revarnished at one time. Buttplate is marked "5/ W" above an indiscernible imperial proof, with "L" marked to the right of the lower buttplate screw. Dovetailed blade front sight (rear sight of ramp checkered), with "roller coaster" rear sight, graduated 4-20. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, bolt stop housing, sear, bbl., blade front sight, rear sight assembly, trigger guard, floorplate, follower, buttstock, handguard, bayonet lug, and buttplate. Bolt assembly, bbl. bands, and receiver screws are mismatched. Receiver retention screws are absent. CONDITION: metal components retain traces of their original arsenal blue finish (in protected areas), with the balance exhibiting a dark gray patina, with light to mild pitting present overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots of light to mild pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. Stock exhibits some scattered spots of adhesive on the butt from a previously applied tape. (25-1375/MLW). CURIO. $600-1,000.
