Lot 1426 TWO DESIRABLE U.S. WWI MODEL 1917-18 TRENCH KNIVES
These trench knives were adopted in 1917 & were effective as well as easily produced in comparison w/ the MK1 trench knife thanks to its conventional blade. These two knives represent the two most common variations. No.1: 8 7/8" triangular blade. 14" overall. Knife is marked inside the "D" guard "A.C. CO. U.S.A. 1917". The guard has the raised triangular flanges on the edge. Screw type pommel w/ Spanner holes. Smooth walnut handle w/ finger grooves. CONDITION: metal was bright, is now returning to gray & patina w/ notable spots of light oxidation & fine pitting. Grips have wear & scattered handling marks. / No.2: 9" triangular blade. 14" overall. Front of the "D" guard is marked "U.S. / L.F. & C. / 1917". The "D" guard has the raised pyramidal knobs & riveted pommel. Smooth walnut handle w/ finger grooves. CONDITION: knife w/ light wear retains traces of blue turning gray & patina w/ peppery oxidation. Grip has light wear & scattered handling marks throughout. (02-24537-4/RW). NON-GUN. $800-1,100.
