Lot 1422 VIETNAM WAR SPECIAL FORCES GROUPING OF MASTER
SERGEANT DON C. FREY. Consignor supplied information: Master Sergeant (Retired) Don C Frey (1933-2016) from Feb. 1962 to Sept. 1962 was SFC as Intel NCO on FTT-46 (Field Training Team) in Thaket, Laos during Operation White Star/Hotfoot. From Sept. 12, 1968 to March 1970, was First Sergeant as S-A NCOIC at Command Liaison Detachment (Camp Goodman) in Saigon, Vietnam. His awards includes 6th Award of the Good Conduct Medal; Army Commendation Medal For Meritorious Achievement; a first & second leaf cluster on a Bronze Star Medal for Meritorius Service; Honorary Vietnamese Jump Wings, and the Second Award of the Combat Infantryman's Badge. This grouping includes 1) "Plum Blade" SOG Knife with sheath. Overall: 10.75". Plum colored 6.5" clip point blade with added etching "5th SPECIAL FORCES GROUP (Abn) / DON C. FREY" along with Special Forces insignia on ricasso. Brass guard & pommel w/ lanyard hole & leather thong. Stacked leather washer handle has finger grooves. Black sheath has pouch for sharpening stone. CONDITION: knife in good condition showing patina & verdigris on brass parts, scuffing of finish on leather washers, steals of worn finish & scratches on blade. Sheath in good condition with scratches & scuffs; sharpening stone broken in 2. 2) Kukri knife & sheath. Overall: 11.5". Right side of blade engraved " PRESENTED TO / MSG DON C. FREY / IN FRIENDSHIP / FROM CPL DOUGLAS CARHART / HM ROYAL MILITARY POLICE / VIET NAM 1970". Brass collar. handle has homemade alloy butt & hand carved "7". Sheath has 2 additional knives (4.25" & 4" overall) & 2 patches. CONDITION: knife in fair intact condition showing chips on edges, marks along spine, marks & scratches.3) Two sided wooden desk name plate measures 13.5" overall. One side shows Don C. Frey's deployment in each Special Forces Group, their respective insignia & time of service: 7th SFG "Mar. 61 - Sep. 63 / Sep. 66 - Aug. 68", 8th SFG "Sep. 63-Aug. 66", 5th SFG "Aug. 68 - Aug. 69 / Sep. 69 - Mar. 70". The other side has "DON C. FREY" in a banner with his various Special Forces Group insignias, Combat Infantry insignia & Master Sergeant insignia. 4) Wooden commemorative plaque approx. 16" in length. The plaque shows the insignia for Republic of Vietnam Army Special Forces, US 7th Special Forces Group, & US 1st Special Forces Command. Then a green beret having 5th Special Forces Group insignia along with dagger. Rectangular plaque reads "PRESENTED TO / MSG DON C. FREY / THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE / FROM / THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF / THE COMMAND LIAISON DETACHMENT / 5th SPECIAL FORCES GROUP AIRBORNE / VIETNAM 1969". Then a banner reads "The Green Beret, ... a symbol of excellence / a mark of distinction, a badge of courage in / the fight for freedom. JOHN F. KENNEDY / PRESIDENT / UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". CONDITION: plaque in very good condition showing light wear.5) Black painted plaque in the same configuration as the one above, except the dates are "SEP 68-MAR 70". This plaque has storage case with red fitted interior. Case exterior is of a blue & red embroidered silk with clouds, birds, etc patterns. CONDITION: case in very good condition.
