El Paso, Texas shipped antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver with holster rig with different cattle ranch brands scratched into the leather. Single action revolver chambered in .45 Long Colt. Manufactured in Hartford, CT circa 1894. Features a blued & case hardened finish, 4 3/4" barrel with two line address, blade front sight, v-notched rear sight, ejector rod with crescent head, fluted six-shot cylinder, two line patent markings on the frame with "Rampant Colt", screw-in cylinder pin retainer, smooth thin trigger, bordered & underlined knurling on the hammer, and two-piece black checkered hard rubber grip with molded Rampant Colt motifs at the tops. Matching serial numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. Other markings: "45 Colt" on the left barrel and assembly number "425" on the loading gate. The action is smooth/crisp, the bore is fair with good rifling, scattered light pitting, the blue is about 10% in protected areas, mostly on the ejector rod housing, with the rest turned a a molted gray/brown patina with some scattered light pitting, the grips are overall good with no chips or cracks, handling wear to the checkering, mostly on the right panel. Comes with a period russet cartridge belt with 40 .45 Colt cartridge loops. The cartridge belt is made of folded, russet skirting leather with an iron buckle. The tongue billet, buckle chape and cartridge loops are sewn to the belt body, Stamped "F.A. Meanea, Cheyenne" (Pre 1890 Wyoming Statehood / No “WT” “WYO” on Trademark) Frank A. Meanea was born in 1849 and came to Cheyenne in 1868 to work in the famous saddle shop owned by his uncle, E.L. Gallatin. He eventually became the owner of the shop and continued to produce saddles, chaps, gun rigs, and all types of leather products until his death in 1928. Russet single loop holster stamped "Jos. Sullivan, Maker. Ft. Benton M.T." (Montana Territory). Circa 1880-83. Illustrated and described on pages 102-103 of "PACKING IRON" by Richard C. Rattenbury. The holster and belt have seven different Montana cattle ranch brands scratched into them. Comes with an old hand written note listing the ranches associated with the brands. We looked up one of the ranches listed, Joseph Henderson, after making his money gold mining in Henderson gulch, he purchased land in 1872. In 1892 Joseph Henderson purchased a purebred Aberdeen-Angus bull to use with his Shorthorn cows. Comes with the Colt factory letter dated 2005 that confirms the features and caliber of the revolver. One of five guns shipped to El Paso Saddlery Co. Texas on February 1, 1894. A Colt SAA with a fantastic history. Worthy of further research.
