Lot 46 J. Rea Brass Flintlock Blunderbuss 10 Bore NVSN

18th Century Brass Cannon-Barrel ‘Royal Navy’ Form Blunderbuss by John Rea of London. John I. Rea, elected Master of the Gunmakers' Company in 1796 and 1805. He worked at 122 Minories 1777-78, and 91 Minories between 1779 and 1797. The present blunderbuss was probably made during the latter period. In 1778 he traded as John Rea & Sons and was contractor to the East India Company until 1804. 16" octagonal/round barrel, 10 bore that flares to 1 1/4" at the muzzle, marked "London" on the top flat. Correct two London proofs on the left flat, "GP" under crown (Gunmakers Proof) and the "V" under crown. (Inspection after proof). Lock marked "J.Rea". The furniture is brass, including ramrod thimbles and features floral engraving and a pineapple trigger guard finial, the triggerguard has a oval containing the Union Jack. Has the original wood ramrod with flared brass loading tip and metal worm at the other end. The lock is complete ,hammer has top jaw and screw, frizzen, frizzen spring, pan, there is a very old piece for leather with flint in the jaw. The hammer action is excellent with half cock working fine, The wood is overall very good with nice hand checkering on the wrist, some minor dents, the is a hairline crack in the forward right forearm. The bore is very good, the brass has a nice mellow patina.
