Bolt-action U.S. Infantry rifle used in both Word Wars. Modified Mauser turn-bolt action. 26" barrel , with rear ladder aperture sight, front sight blade, both with sight protectors. Clip-fed blind 5 rd magazine, hinged floorplate, thumb safety on right receiver. "Winchester Model of 1917" and serial number marked on receiver ring. Winchester barrel date 12-18, with flaming bomb and "W", serial number also dates to 1918. Winchester bolt handle stamped "W" and "N.S.", nickel steel, bolt cocking piece is stamped "W". Eagle head cartouche "1R" behind the triggerguard, left stock below the receiver is stamped "R.A.-P" in rectangle.(Rebuild/inspection mark from Raritan Arsenal), below that is stamped "U.S.N." in block letters. (Ordnance Dept. records indicate 1,123,259 Model 1917 rifles had been shipped to France prior to the cessation of hostilities. The vast majority of these rifles were acquired by the U.S. Army, but limited numbers were also procured by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps) The original M1907 brown leather sling is stamped "U.S.N.", "W.T.& B Co. (Westboro Trunk & Bag Co) 1918 and C.A.C". Bore is very good/bright, strong rifling. Action is smooth/tight. Blued metal finish is good about 70% with handling wear on the bolt floorplate and receiver. Wood stock, and hand guards are very good. Cleaning gear in buttstock. A nice/rare conditioned Model 1917, parts/dates correct. No import marks.
