Lot 10 H. Scherping 98 Mauser 8mm SN: 1246

High-quality, custom-built, pre-war sporting rifle by German gunmaker Heinrich Scherping,based on a Mauser 98 action. Scherping started his business in Hannover in 1857 and quickly became the gunmaker for the royal court. The business was continued by his descendants and their partners until the late 1930's. The bolt and small parts being numbered 1246 or a partial version of that, bolt handle bears a "crown/N" proof. The receiver is lightly engraved and bears " 2,89 G.B.P." over "St.m.G" on the left side. (This translates to 2.89 grams of Gewehr Blättchen Pulver, rifle flake powder, St. m, G: This stands for Stahlmantel Geschoss (steel-jacketed bullet)The floor plate and trigger guard are also lightly engraved. The 23" round/octagonal barrel has a lightly engraved border where it meets the receiver and is marked "BOHLER SPECIAL" on both sides. The barrel is also marked "HEINRICH SCHERPING HANNOVER". Double set adjustable triggers, floorplate release latch, barrel rib has a blade/bead front and a two leaf flip rear sights, European style scope bases, knurled bolt knob. It is mounted in a fancy walnut pistol grip stock with a small schnabel forend with contrasting ebony tip, raised oval foregrip areas, fine multi-point checkering on the pistol grip area, a shadow line cheek rest, and a knurled horn buttplate. the bore is very good, strong rifling, action is smooth, receiver and triggerguard are mostly in the white from handling, traces of case color, bolt release still has fire blur color, barrel blue is about 945 with minor muzzle wear, minor scratches/rubs and the wood is overall very good/sound with many small scratches/dings. It includes period leather sling in fair condition with scuffs,tear.
