British 1897 Pattern Infantry Sword with Scabbard, #M3991, 32.25" blade, 38.25" OAL. Blade is marked "ROBERTS & SONS/BIRMINGHAM/MAKERS TO THE WAR & INDIA OFFICES" on left side, with a silver "PROOF" button on the right side. Straight blade is marked with a "(crown)" over the British Royal Coat of Arms on the right side and a "(crown)" on the left side, with decorative motifs on both sides. Nickeled three-quarter basket hilt has a pierced foliage decorated guard marked with the Crowned Cipher of Queen Victoria. Shagreen grip is wrapped with spring steel wire with a checkered back strap and nickeled pommel. Condition is very good, blade appears to have been renickeled and the markings are now muted. Guard shows light use and toning. Grip shows wear and there is a loose wire on the right side. Leather knot is in fair condition. Scabbard is unmarked and has a brown leather cover on the body and a nickeled throat. Condition is fair with the leather showing craze cracking, scratches, and scuffs to the finish. There is a crack and separation to the drag but the wood interior appears intact. Blade enters and withdraws smoothly. Est.: $200-$400.
