French Model 1866 Chassepot Bolt Action Rifle with Magazine, #J23988, 11x59Rmm cal., 32.25" barrel, blued finish, hardwood stock, inverted-"V" front sight, rear sight has been removed and the surface has been filled with an unknown material. Includes a steel cleaning rod. A fixed steel magazine has been fitted to bottom of the receiver. Rifle is marked "MANUFACTURE IMPERIALE/St Etienne" and "MLE 1866" on left side of the receiver and "S 1869"on right side of the barrel shank. Numbers do not match. Condition overall is fair with the metal toned to brown. Bolt assembly has been cleaned and shows general fine pitting. Stock is cracked at the wrist, behind the receiver tang. Wood is otherwise good with scattered dents, scratches, and some darkening to the finish. Action functions but is a little stiff. Bore rates fair with rust at the muzzle. An interesting rifle worth further research. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
