SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA. S# 136929. "COMBAT SHOTGUNS" by Canfield notes that the serial number range for military issued Model 10 shotguns falls between 117731 and 165566. The Model 10 was a bottom eject hammerless design first introduced in 1908. During World War I the U.S. military issued the Model 10 trench guns in smaller numbers, alongside the Winchester Model 1897 shotguns. Bbl. 23", with cyl. bore and bayonet lug with brass bead for use with the Model 1917 rifle bayonet. Grooved slide handle, with pistol grip walnut stock having the original buttplate. Bbl. is fitted with a reproduction wooden handguard. The original handguards were very fragile, and are seldom found intact today. Web sling on original swivels. Blue finished metal. Right side of receiver is marked "U.S." under a flaming ordnance bomb proof. CONDITION: gun has a reblued finish. Bbl. and action are coarsely polished, mag. tube is bead blasted. Under portions of bbl. show spots of bluing loss and pitting. Slide handle and stock have added finish over scratches, marks, and small dents. Replacement handguard has a satin finish, showing handling marks, with a crack extending from the right side from the front edge. Action has sound function. Bore is generally bright, showing some very light pitting, with a small indentation on the bottom caused by the bayonet lug attachment screw. (25-1658/DS). CURIO. $4,000-6,000.
