Lot 4572 FINE "AS FOUND" BRASS HEADED PIPE TOMAHAWK

PICTURED IN TOMAHAWKS OF THE AMERICAN FRONTIER. 16" ovoid tapered haft, 7" dark patinaed brass head, 2.25" cutting edge. Haft has decorated inset lead/pewter ring at mouthpiece and large carved decorated lead/pewter cap at eye. Pictured on page 83, color plate 163 of John Baldwin's 1995 text "Tomahawks, Pipe Axes, of the American Frontier. CONDITION: very good overall, head has heavy mottled dark mustard/black color with verdigris, scattered small dings, dents, and scratches. Haft has hand worn patina, pewter cap and inlay white lead oxide patina. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18508/JS). $1,500-2,500.
