Lot 1615 SCARCE AMERICAN BUFFALO SKINNING KNIFE BY GOODELL.

Overall length: 9 3/4". Blade length: 5 3/8". A seldom seen survivor of the late 19th century buffalo annihilation on the plains. This knife has a 4" false edge at the top and a large clear mark on the flat of the blade measuring nearly 2" that reads, "GOODELL'S STAR * HUNTER PAT. OCT. 6 1868". The hilt is a dark hardwood with parallel incised line decoration and an inlaid pewter star and acorn on each side. There is also a pewter ferrule at the transition from knife to grip. Original leather sheath. CONDITION: blade has understandably been sharpened a few times but without affecting the profile of the blade. Grip shows light wear. Sheath has losses at the top.
