Lovely Winchester Model 1885 Takedown ''Low-Wall'' Scheutzen-Style Single Shot Sporting Rifle, #114592, .25 RF cal., blued 26'' octagonal barrel with dovetailed hooded Beach-type front sight, two sets of screw-filled holes for rear sights, and folding adjustable peep tang sight, marked with the Winchester name, address and 1879-1907 patent dates on left angled flat, ''25 RF'' and an oval ''W'' proofmark at breech, and ''1'' underneath (denoting weight of the barrel); blued ''Thickside'' frame with takedown button at bottom-front, case hardened serpentine operating lever, dropping-block action, and hammer; varnished pistol-grip buttstock with oval hard rubber gripcap having ''Winchester Repeating Arms Co.'' on its circumference and a nickeled Swiss-style buttplate, matching forearm with buffalo horn inlay at Schnabel tip. Mfg'd ca. 1919, with full-blued finish. Condition is excellent+. Blued parts retain approx. 96% original deep glossy finish (minor wear at muzzle/front sight area), case hardening with strong mottling and colors. Stocks with 85% original varnish (fit ''proud'' to the metal, have a dent at top of wrist on right side) and very minor handling marks, buttplate with most of its bright original nickel. Action is smooth and light; bore is clean, shiny and with defined rifling. This rifle, with its uncommon varnished, pistol-grip Schuetzen-style stocks, tang sight, takedown feature, and .25 rimfire caliber is a rare find, indeed. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (C&R)
