Lot 63 Remington New Model Army Perc. Revolver

Civil War Remington New Model Army Percussion Revolver, #101170, .44 cal., 8'' octagonal barrel with screw-in blade front sight marked on top flat ''Patented Sept. 14, 1858/E. Remington & Sons Ilion, New York U.S.A./New-Model'', and ''D'' and ''B'' on side flats adjacent to frame; solid frame with long sighting groove on topstrap and integral gripstraps marked ''B'' on both sides at barrel threads, ''W'' at left hammer screw and serial number under left grip; plain 6-shot round cylinder; brass triggerguard is marked ''D'' at front screw; two-piece oil-stained walnut grips with a rectangular military inspector's cartouche at left side and small ''D''s at each side on butt. Mfg'd ca. 1863-75, originally with full blued finish and case hardened hammer. Condition is very good+. Barrel, lever, frame and straps retain approx. 50% blue (dark and glossy at frame sides), cylinder a smooth gunmetal gray-brown, hammer showing mottled case colors. Grips are smooth with only minor wear and marks and small chips out at right side. Action is strong and smooth; bore is mostly shiny with deep rifling. The last Remington .44 cal. percussion revolver, the New Model Army was a favorite of Union troops and of Buffalo Bill Cody, who stated ''It never failed me.'' Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
