Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, #256005, .45-70 Gov't. cal., 32-5/8'' barrel is marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''P'' at breech with integral block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and long-range adjustable rear sight (correctly marked ''R'' for Rifle); flat lockplate is marked ''(spread eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' beneath trapdoor latch; steel furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands (top with sling swivel), two-piece triggerguard with sling swivel, buttplate marked ''US'' on top tang, nosecap, slotted button-head cleaning rod; one-piece oil-finished walnut fullstock. Condition is very good, the barrel with a smooth brownish-blue patina and balance of the metal gunmetal gray with all markings sharp. Stock is smooth and solid with the expected light marks of military use and a very clear ''SWP/1884'' cartouche of armory inspector Samuel W. Porter at left wrist.
