Civil War Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Infantry Rifle-Musket, Type I, NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' barrel with block-blade front sight (doubles as a bayonet lug) and 2-leaf rear sight, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' and ''1863'' at breech; flat beveled lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' under nipple bolster stamped with a spread-wing eagle, and ''1863'' to rear; iron furniture including three spring-retained barrel bands (middle with sling swivel), two-piece triggerguard with sling swivel at front, curved rifle buttplate, and tulip-head ramrod. Mfg'd ca. 1863. Condition is near fine, the metal surfaces having a clean ''arsenal-bright'' finish with sharp edges and markings, and the oil-stained walnut fullstock being solid with only minor handling marks, nice color, and two military inspectors' marks to left of lock: ''GH'' (George Haines) within a rectangle and ''ESA'' (Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin) within an oval cartouche. Action is strong; bore is clean with distinct rifling. Est.: $700-$1,200. (Antique)
