Civil War Maynard Military Issue 2nd Model Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, #15715, .50 cal., 20'' part-round part-octagonal tip-down barrel, with dovetailed blade front and two-leaf rear sights, marked ''M'' at left breech; case hardened steel receiver with its left-side sling bar and ring marked ''Edward Maynard Patentee/May 27, 1851/Dec. 6, 1959'' on left, and ''Manufactured by/Mass. Arms Co./Chicopee Falls'' on right; serpentine operating lever raises hinged barrel for loading prepared cartridges; oil-stained walnut buttstock has ''SWP'' (Samuel W. Porter) and ''JM'' (John Maggs or Maj. Julian McAllister) inspectors' cartouches at left wrist and a steel rifle buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is excellent, the barrel retains approx. 95% military blue; the receiver and lever with mottled case coloring; the buttplate a dull blue-brown. Stock has a few marks from age and military use, with sharp inspectors' marks, lovely color, grain and finish. Action is strong; bore is brilliant with deep rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
