Civil War Gallager's Patent Saddle Ring Percussion Carbine, #21073, .50 cal., 22.25'' barrel, with dovetailed block-blade front and single-leaf rear sight, is unmarked; lockplate is marked ''Gallager's Patent/July 17th, 1860'' to left of ''Manufact'd by/Richardson & Overman/Philada'' over ''21073''; serpentine operating lever when dropped slides barrel forward to open breech for loading/extracting prepared cartridges; oil-stained walnut buttstock with iron mountings including right-side patchbox that opens to a trap for patches and spare parts, sling bar and ring on left side opposite lockplate, and a carbine buttplate. Condition is very good. Barrel has a smooth deep blue-brown patina; silvered-out case hardening on receiver mixed with scattered light discoloration, the balance of the metal being smooth gunmetal gray. Buttstock is solid and smooth with a likely later thin coat of varnish. Markings and edges are sharp; action is smooth; bore is clean with deep rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
