The octagon barrel measures 22” of approximately .58 caliber. Ingenious bolt with hand operated cocking system at the left of the rear of the frame. 90%-95% original blue. Near excellent half stock. A lot of interesting features such as very early for American bolt action, needle fire,military caliber, and very sophisticated for cartridge arm in 1849 America. Springfield Armory has one in their collection and a few others are known in .40 caliber. Could this be a test piece due to large and uniquecaliber with rifled bore?
